Taekwon-Do Curriculum
Our school follows the curriculum laid out by the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) and is composed of 5 main components referred to as the Composition of Taekwon-Do (Taekwon-Do Guseong 태권도 구성):
Fundamental techniques (Kibon Yeonseup 기본 연습)
Patterns (Teul 틀)
Sparring (Matseogi 맞서기)
Forging/Maintenance of the tool (Dallyeon 단련)
Self-Defense (Hoshinsul 호신술)
Wushu Curriculium
We teach the standardized Wushu forms for Long Fist (Changquan 长拳/長拳), Southern Fist (Nanquan 南拳), and Taijiquan (Taijiquan 太极拳). The disciplines are divided by Taolu, which are routines composed of fundamental movements for that particular style for empty hand forms and apparatus forms (long and short weapon), Sanda which is the sparring discipline composed of striking and throwing. We also have standardized competition forms which are part of our curriculum such as:
4th Duan (Group C) Elementary Routines
6th Duan (Group B) First Generation Compulsory Routines
24 Form Simplified Taijiquan
System of Rank (Dan Geup Jido 단급지도)
There are 5 colors (not including black) for our ranking system with intermediate ranks for each color. It starts from the 10th Grade (White Belt) all the way up to 1st Grade Black Belt Candidate (Sr. Red Belt):
White (10th and 9th Grade) - Signifies innocence, as that of a beginning student who has no previous knowledge of Taekwon-Do.
Yellow (8th and 7th Grade) - Signifies the Earth from which a plant sprouts and takes root as the Taekwon-Do foundation is being laid.
Green (6th and 5th Grade) - Signifies the plant’s growth as the Taekwon-Do skill begins to develop.
Blue (4th and 3rd Grade) - Signifies the Heaven (Sky), towards which the plant matures into a towering tree as training in the Taekwon-Do progresses.
Red (2nd and 1st Grade) - Signifies danger, cautioning the student to exercise control and warning the opponent to stay away.
Black (1st through 9th Degree) - Opposite of white, therefore signifying the maturity and proficiency in Taekwon-Do. It also indicates the wearer’s imperviousness to darkness and fear.
Why begin with the lowest of the two digit numbers? why not begin with the lowest one digit number and proceed from first grade to ninth grade and then begin again for degrees?
